Why choose Butyl pond liner?

Butyl rubber pond liner has been trusted by professional pond builders for more than 50 years because it combines exceptional flexibility with outstanding durability. Suitable for koi ponds, wildlife ponds, ornamental garden ponds, lakes, streams and water features, genuine Butyl rubber easily moulds around shelves, curves and planting areas to create a watertight seal. Naturally resistant to UV light, frost and weathering, Butyl remains flexible throughout the seasons. When installed with a quality geotextile underlay, a Butyl pond liner can provide decades of reliable performance.

What thickness is available?

Our Butyl pond liner is manufactured in a durable 0.75mm thickness, offering an excellent balance of flexibility, strength and long-term reliability. Made from premium synthetic rubber, it is suitable for virtually every pond application, including:

  • Wildlife ponds
  • Koi ponds
  • Ornamental garden ponds
  • Raised ponds
  • Streams and waterfalls
  • Lakes
  • Reservoirs
  • Tailor-made and box-welded liners

Compared with PVC pond liner, Butyl is significantly more flexible, more resistant to punctures and has a much longer expected lifespan. In the unlikely event of accidental damage, it can usually be repaired using a suitable pond liner repair kit.

How long does Butyl last?

One of the biggest advantages of Butyl rubber is its exceptional longevity. When installed correctly with protective underlay and protected from sharp objects during installation, a Butyl pond liner can last for many decades.

The manufacturer's warranty is:

  • Lifetime for orders under 100 square metres
  • 25 years for orders over 100 square metres

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for full warranty details.

Benefits of Butyl Rubber Pond Liner:

  • Excellent flexibility for irregular pond shapes
  • UV resistant to help prevent deterioration in sunlight
  • Frost resistant and remains flexible in cold weather
  • Butyl rubber is widely regarded as one of the most durable and flexible pond liner materials available
  • Fish, wildlife and plant safe
  • Highly resistant to punctures when used with an underlay liner
  • Easy to repair if accidental damage occurs
  • Suitable for formal and natural pond designs
  • Long service life

How do I calculate the liner size?

If you know what length and width of Butyl liner to order, then add them to the relevant boxes above by using the drop downs, or if you are not sure how much to order, then go to our pond liner size calculator and add in the exact measurements of your pond and the calculator will work out how much you need to order to avoid waste or disappointment.

Butyl or Epalyn EPDM pond liner?

Both Butyl and Epalyn EPDM are premium rubber pond liners offering excellent flexibility and durability. Butyl has a long-established reputation among professional pond builders, while EPDM has become increasingly popular due to its excellent weather resistance and value. Both materials provide an outstanding solution for building long-lasting garden ponds when installed correctly.

Is Butyl pond liner safe for fish?

Yes. Quality Butyl rubber pond liner is non-toxic and completely safe for fish, amphibians, aquatic plants and other wildlife. Once installed, it provides a stable waterproof barrier without releasing harmful substances into the water, making it ideal for koi ponds and wildlife ponds alike.

Do I need a pond underlay?

Although Butyl rubber is extremely durable, we always recommend installing a heavy-duty geotextile underlay beneath the liner. Underlay protects against sharp stones, roots and ground movement, helping maximise the life of your pond liner and reducing the risk of punctures.

How to install a Butyl pond liner

Installing a Butyl pond liner is straightforward with a little preparation. Start by excavating your pond to the required shape and depth, ensuring the top edge is level all the way around. Carefully remove any sharp stones, flint, roots or other objects that could damage the liner over time.

Before laying the liner, we strongly recommend installing a heavy-duty geotextile underlay. The underlay provides additional protection against punctures caused by stones, roots and ground movement, helping to extend the life of your pond liner.

Once the underlay is in place, carefully unfold the Butyl pond liner and drape it evenly over the excavation, allowing an equal overlap around all sides of the pond. Gently ease the liner into the contours of the pond, smoothing out smaller wrinkles and neatly folding any larger pleats without stretching the material.

Begin filling the pond with water slowly. As the water level rises, continue adjusting the liner so it settles naturally into the shape of the pond. When the pond is completely full, leave it for at least 48 hours before trimming any excess liner or completing the edging. This allows you to confirm that the liner has not been damaged during installation and has settled fully into position.

Once you are satisfied everything is watertight, finish the pond edges using your chosen materials. If using paving slabs or coping stones, ensure they overlap the pond liner by at least 51 mm (2 inches) to conceal and protect the liner from sunlight and accidental damage.

Expert Tip: Avoid installing a Butyl pond liner on very hot, sunny days when the material becomes softer and more difficult to position accurately. A mild, dry day provides the best conditions for achieving a neat, wrinkle-free installation.
