Most prefabricated ponds have a lip around the edge. It is difficult to hide the lip using grass or other vegetation, unless it is a very narrow-lipped pond. But, a lip can be covered using attractive paving slabs.

Before going out to buy a prefabricated pond, it is recommended that some preparation is done first:
- source and study catalogues to get as much information on designs and product information,
- visit a garden or aquatic centre for ideas,
- once you have found the design you want, write down the dimensions and then mark out the pond on an area of your garden sited for the pond. You can use a hose pipe, rope or sand to do this,
- if you intend to stock fish, check that the depth is sufficient,
- check that the material of the pond is durable and robust enough to give many years of service.
