Folding corners of a flexible pond liner

Flexible Pond Liners

The introduction of flexible pond liners Butyl and Epalyn (EDPM = Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) has greatly improved pond building techniques.  The great strength of these flexible rubber pond liners provides an an extremely durable construction material while its elasticity allows stretch ability. The flexibility of these liners allows them to stretch with earth movement or ice pressure. Cement lined ponds are known to crack under such enviromental conditions. Epalyn and Butyl rubber liners are superior in durability, flexibility and UV resistant in comparison to PVC pond liners.

Installing a flexible pond liner

Once you have excavated the hole for your garden pond, removed all sharp objects and protruding stones, packed down the soil so that it is hard and level, and installed the protective pond underlay, you are then ready to install your rubber pond liner. To get the best flexibility and a more malleable liner for the installation process, allow the liner to warm in the sun for a few hours first. To do this, spread the liner tautly and evenly over the pond excavation, being sure that it is centered with an equal amount of overlap on all sides. It is advisable to have four people to help you place your flexible pond liner over your pond. Each person can take a corner and make sure the liner is equal at all areas of the pond. You may then want to anchor the pond liner with a small weight such as a rock on the outer edges to keep the pond liner in place.

Folding the corners of the pond liner

Place a garden hose in the center and begin to run water onto it. The weight of the water will begin to pull the liner down, stretching and folding it to the contours of the pond. When your pond is filling with water, someone should get in it with their shoes removed, to help the liner fold into the corners of the pond and to ensure the pond liner is not being pulled down unevenly. On completion, tuck the edge of the pond liner under 15cm of soil or keep it hidden underneath stones.
